It was an eye opening experience being able to take part in this competition and I’m thankful that I’ve been given the opportunity to do something I wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to, and also to compete with the best that the hospitality scene has to offer. It has definitely been a humbling lesson as well as I’ve learnt just how wide the spectrum of what we do as hoteliers encompasses. Over the counter, our primary goal is guest satisfaction, but at higher levels, there is a lot to consider. Revenue, occupancy forecasting, strategies to increase revenue per available room, the list is incredible. This chance to compete has shown me how much more I need to grow and learn from others so that I can reach where I want to go, and bring others along as well. This challenge has reaffirmed my decision to persue this as a career and make it a proper life’s work. I’d like to thank all involved for molding and grooming me and constantly challenging and guiding me to be a better server to my guests, and a better leader to those around me.
I feel the biggest take away I’ve gained from being able to compete at this level is just to have been surrounded by people who’ve been through the competition and seen their level of care and expertise in their craft. Also, being able to learn from my fellow contestants was extremely enlightening as I’ve discovered multiple approaches different organisations take to solve very similar and widespread issues.
